Barbara Baldwin DeFrees was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, on August 4, 1908, to Harry D. and Mabel Kennedy Baldwin.
She attended elementary school in Tidioute, where her father had a cutlery manufacturing plant.
Barbara graduated from Jamestown, New York, High School and Ripon, Wisconsin, College, majoring in music.
She later served on the college board of trustees and was awarded the Medal of Merit.
Barbara was a violinist and pianist, her musical studies included Princeton Choir School, Northampton, Massachusetts,
where she sand with the F. Melius Christianson Choir; Athens, Greece, during the summer of 1936; summer schools at Cornell University, 1969-71;
and as a chorus member of the Chautauqua Opera Association. She taught music in public schools in Kaukauna and Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Jamestown.
She also taught in North Warren and Starbrick as a part-time instructor from 1945-47.
She served on the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees from 1976-84 and was instrumental in reviving the Chautauqua Opera Guild.
Barbara was a past president of the Warren General Hospital Auxiliary and a past vice president of the Warren Library Association Board of Control.
She had been a president of the Warren Relief Association and a past director of the Woman's Club of Warren.
She was a past vice president of the Warren County Housing Authority, a member of the League of Women Voters,
and a past board member of the Warren-Forest Counties Economic Opportunity Council.
Barbara and Joseph DeFrees philanthropic legacy lives on through the DeFrees Foundation.
